The Bank of Saint George, founded in 1407, was one of the oldest and most powerful banks in Europe, and it played a crucial role in solidifying Genoa’s status as a banking powerhouse. Genoa was also part of the Silk Road trade network, and its involvement allowed it to establish a trading post in Crimea in 1346, which expanded its trade network and access to new markets.
